The Atlanta Open

May 11th-13th, 2004

Atlanta's Hottest Tournament

Borja Golan wins the Partnertel Atlanta Open 2004

The partnerTel Atlanta Open was described as the best event from all the
PSA and amateurs have ever played at the Concourse Athletic Club in
Atlanta. With pro and amateur players coming in from all over the world
the 142 players makes it the biggest and most entertaining event in the
Southeast and its just in its fifth year. It started off on Thursday
night with the players and sponsors cocktail party at the well know
restaurent and bar East Andrews Cafe. Players and sponsors partied in
the night away and Andre and Danielle thanked all the sponsors with
thank you gifts for being part of this event. Special guest for the
weekend and President of the USSRA Ken Stillman arrived in his Limo to
the cocktail party and was not shy to have a few quiet ones with the
players and sponsors and he kept his word that he would be back this
year from last years event.
Friday was the start for the amateurs and rest day for the pros who
played their quater final games on Thursday with Irelands John Rooney
having the biggest upset with a 2 hour marathon five set win
against Nr 1 seed Shahier Razik.
Friday night we had Brio restaurent cater the food with an open bar for
all the players and pros.
Saturday was semi final day and the highest seed left was nr 2 seed
Borja Golan who had a comptable win over 2002 Atlanta Open winner
Bradley Ball 15-12, 15-10, 15-7. The second semi final was between
Alister Walker and John Rooney. England's unseeded Alister Walker scored
his second successive victory over a seeded player in the Atlanta
Partnertel Squash Open when he upset Ireland's sixth seed John Rooney to
reach the final in Atlanta, Georgia with a 15-12, 8-15, 13-15, 15-8,
15-6 win.
Saturday night was Eleven 50 night with all the players getting their
dancing shoes on and being picked up by the Furbus who provided them
with music and drinks for an a night the lads will remember for a long
time. Eleven 50 is Atlantas hottest night club with Andre and Danielle
sealing off the VIP section for all the players so they could have the
celebrity treatment. Players drank and partied until 3 am in the morning
with some only arrivng in at 7am in the morning. No names to
mentioned!!! A great venu with outdoors poll and indoor dance floor
which made everyone s night no forgetting all the lovely Georgia
girls!!!!
Sunday was finals day and I was unable to get up as I had a few rotten
drinks with Bradley Ball helping me out big time from the night before.
I had my assistant Chuck to be the Tournament Director who ran
everything as smooth as possible. All UUSRA finals where on time and the
build up to the finals where getting closer.
I had finally recovered and back in control and the finals where ready
to start between Borja Golan and Alister Walker.
before the finals I had the Georgia Force cheerleaders to dance to get
everybody in the mood for a great final.Bread Crumbs who had a 5 star
set up for the food put on a great display and Danielle and Lynn were in
control for the Martini Bar.
The final was a classic going the full distance with Borja squeezing
past 15-12, 8-15, 15-10, 7-15, 15-7 in the fifth to claim his 100%
record in winning all 6 finals he has played in the last 2 years
After the presentation we had the big raffle to help "Save the Children
Foundation" with great prize with a free trip to Jamaica worth $7000 at
the Superclubs resort Grand Lido Negril and not forgetting a free one
year membership at the Concourse Athletic Club. There where several
other great prizes to be won and when you you come down next year you
will see why this is an event you should not miss and add it to your
calendar and tell all you other squash firends for the most social and
best tournament in the Atlanta and US
.
